- Boomerang Science
-
- Although stone age civilizations invented the
boomerang, the aerodynamics and physics of its flight are still not
completely understood by today's experts.
-
- The really short version:
- Boomerangs return as a result of the principles of
lift and drag and gyroscopic precession.
-
- The short version:
- Boomerangs are thrown nearly vertical with spin.
Because the boomerang is both moving forward and rotating, the velocity of
the wing at the top is traveling faster than when the wing is at the
bottom position. Therefore, there is more lift at the top. The cumulative
lift over a full revolution biases the lift above the center of gravity.
This causes the boomerang to want to flip over upside down.
-
- However, gyroscopic precession causes the flip to take
place in a plane 90 degrees forward of the lift force in the direction of
spin. Therefore the forward position of the boomerang curves inward,
instead of the the top flipping over.
