What these Disc Rating Numbers Mean

The following system is useful for rating various aspects of a disc's performance.  These descriptions are based on a right handed backhand throw.  The flight is broken into two phases and rated individually.

HIGH SPEED is the first part of the flight

LOW SPEED is the end of the flight

STABILITY is a description of the disc's flight path.  UNDERSTABLE means a flight that turns right, STABLE is a flight that doesn't turn, OVERSTABLE refers to a flight that turns to the left.

SPEED is a rating of how quickly a disc cuts through the air.

SPEED is rated on a 1 to 8 scale where 8 is the fastest.

GLIDE is how much "carry" or "float" a disc has.

GLIDE is rated on a 1 to 5 scale where 5 is the most glide.

HIGH SPEED TURN refers to the first part of the disc's flight

HIGH SPEED TURN is rated from

-3 (most understable) to +1 (most overstable).

LOW SPEED FADE refers to the last part of the disc's flight

LOW SPEED FADE is rated from 0 (stable) to +3 (overstable).

A couple of examples

The Banshee

The Banshee rates an 8 for SPEED, so it's very fast and will go far with the right throw.  For GLIDE, the Banshee rates a 3, putting it in the middle of that scale.  The Banshee rates a +1 on the HIGH SPEED TURN scale, which means that it will naturally make a gentle left turn if thrown normally.  On the LOW SPEED FADE scale, the Banshee rates a +2, meaning that it will drop fairly quickly to the left at the end of its flight.

THE AERO

The AERO rates an 3 for SPEED, making it slower than the Banshee..  For GLIDE, the AERO rates a 5, putting it at the top of that scale, a real floater.  The AERO rates a 0 on the HIGH SPEED TURN scale, which means that it will naturally go straight if thrown correctly.  On the LOW SPEED FADE scale, the AERO also rates a 0, meaning that it should drop straight and level at the end of its flight.  A great disc for touch shots.
