Local Things to Do

Beaufort Historic Site

Photo of the Josiah Bell House, c1825, located on the grounds of the Beaufort Historic Site, Beaufort, NC.

The Beaufort Historical Association is a private, non-profit, membership and volunteer based organization founded in 1960 by a group of Carteret County citizens without the aid of grants and public funds. The organization owns and operates the Beaufort Historic Site, which depicts 18th and 19th century life in Beaufort and includes six authentically restored historic buildings open for tours (link to tours page) year round. The site is open to the public and staffed six-days a week, year round, and seven days a week June - August.

North Carolina Maritime Museum

The North Carolina Maritime Museum documents, collects, preserves, and researches the maritime history—and its corollary natural history—of coastal North Carolina for the purpose of interpreting this history through educational services and exhibits for our contemporary society, and passing intact its material culture to future generations.  All of the museum's programs and exhibits, both general and specialized, interpret the state's cultural maritime history and offer a larger national perspective on coastal environment and barrier island ecology.

North Carolina Aquarium at Emerald Isle

PKS exterior at night

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores takes you across the state on an aquatic journey “from the mountains to the sea.” Five galleries depict the aquatic habitats and inhabitants of each major zone – Mountain, Piedmont , Coastal Plain, Tidal Waters and Ocean.  The Aquarium recently underwent a $25 million renovation that tripled its size to 93,000 square feet. The remodeling brought nearly 40 new exhibits and many new programs.

Golf

http://www.northriverclub.com/index.php

The North River Club Golf Course is an 18 hole world class, championship course designed by award winning architect Bob Moore of the JMP Golf Design Group. It is the only golf course in Beaufort.

The North River Club golf course boasts 7100 yards with expansive waste bunkers that enhance the visual elements of the course and make for easy maneuvering during play. Huge lakes and ponds, many with wooden bulkheads, have been created and approximately 7 holes have water features that come into play.

There will be a large practice range and a putting green for use by members. The opening date for beginning play is projected for sometime in early 2007.

The spacious two story club house will include a club grill, pro shop lockers and members lounge.
